Our client is a well-established independent building services contractor delivering mechanical and electrical solutions across a range of sectors including commercial, leisure, healthcare, education and industrial projects.

 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for leading the mechanical design function on projects, from early-stage feasibility and project brief development through to detailed design, installation support, and handover. The role includes undertaking and overseeing site surveys, managing design risk, mentoring junior engineers, and acting as a technical point of contact for clients and internal teams.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Lead mechanical design for HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, water services, drainage, and specialist systems
  • Develop project briefs, employer’s requirements, and concept designs
  • Produce and review calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Ensure compliance with UK Building Regulations, British Standards, and CIBSE guidance
  • Undertake site surveys and assess existing mechanical systems
  • Identify risks, constraints, and opportunities at early stages
  • Prepare survey and feasibility reports to support proposals and cost plans
  • Coordinate designs with electrical, public health, architectural, and structural teams
  • Attend design, client, and site meetings
  • Support procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning activities
  • Act as Lead Mechanical Engineer on assigned projects
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians
  • Contribute to design standards, BIM processes, and continuous improvement

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Degree or HND in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 5 years post qualification experience 
  • The candidate must be from a contractor or consultancy background
  • Strong experience in mechanical building services design, ideally in a D&B environment
  • Proven delivery from concept to handover
  • Excellent knowledge of UK regulations and CIBSE guidance
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (Revit MEP desirable)
  • Strong communication and leadership skills

 

Desirable

  • Chartered or working towards CEng/IEng
  • Experience leading multi-discipline projects
  • BIM Level 2 experience
  • Background in commercial, education, leisure, or refurbishment projects
